Celebrating 40 Years of Big Louie’s Pizzeria in South Florida

Four Delicious Decades of Big Louie’s

Walking into Big Louie’s Pizzeria today, you know right away what you came for. The smell of hand-tossed New York-style pizza hits you first, then the sound of families talking over big plates of pasta, and the familiar sight of staff greeting regulars by name. It feels relaxed, a little nostalgic, and very much like home for anyone who loves Italian food in South Florida.

Next month, we celebrate 40 years of serving that experience to our neighbors. This milestone means more to us than an anniversary banner or a special slice. It is a chance to look back at how we started in Fort Lauderdale with one pizza oven, how we grew into a local favorite, and how the people who eat with us, work with us, and live around us turned Big Louie’s into a South Florida tradition. In this article, we are sharing our story, some of the moments that shaped us, and how we plan to keep serving the Italian dishes you love for years to come.

From One Pizza Oven to a South Florida Favorite

When we opened our doors in Fort Lauderdale in 1986, the idea was simple. We wanted to bring the flavor and feel of authentic New York-style pizza, along with classic Italian family recipes, to a neighborhood that appreciated good food and generous portions. There was one pizza oven, a small team, and a short menu focused on doing a few things really well.

Those early days were full of long hours and small victories. We obsessed over fresh dough, made in-house, and sauces that simmered until they were rich and comforting. Every pizza that came out of the oven felt like a small promise kept. We did not have big signs or flashy ads, just a commitment to serving food that reminded people of the best family dinners they had ever had.

Word traveled quickly. Friends told friends, hotel guests asked locals where to go for Italian food in South Florida, and more and more people started showing up for slices, subs, and pasta. Before long, we were seeing the same faces week after week, and the dining room filled up with regulars who knew their order before they sat down. Those busy nights and familiar faces gave us the confidence to take our first steps toward growing beyond that original shop.

Growing the Family: Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach

As our Fort Lauderdale location stayed packed with regulars and new guests, we knew there was room to share Big Louie’s with more of South Florida. Opening additional locations, including Pompano Beach, was less about getting bigger and more about giving more neighborhoods a place to enjoy the same food and friendly welcome. Expansion only made sense if every oven, every table, and every staff member carried the same spirit as the original store.

Across our locations, the details stay consistent. The dough is still hand-tossed, the sauces are still slow-simmered, and the portions are still generous enough for sharing or taking home leftovers. Our teams greet guests with the same easygoing warmth, whether you are grabbing a slice at the counter or settling in for a long family dinner. We want every restaurant to feel like the one where you made your first Big Louie’s memory.

Over time, we have collected countless stories that link our locations together. Families who first visited us in Fort Lauderdale later celebrated graduations or anniversaries at Pompano Beach. Staff members stayed with us for years, watching kids who once needed high chairs grow up and order their own pies. Guests moved from one part of South Florida to another and were genuinely relieved to find there was a Big Louie’s nearby, ready with the same Italian comfort food they remembered.

The Heart of Big Louie’s: Family Traditions and Loyal Guests

At the center of everything we cook is family. Our recipes are inspired by the kind of food that comes from home kitchens, where sauce recipes are shared across generations and everyone has an opinion on how thin the pizza should be. We keep our approach grounded in those traditions: dough from scratch, sauces built layer by layer, and dishes that feel like they belong on a family table, not just in a takeout box.

Over four decades, we have watched entire chapters of life unfold around our pizza and pastas. Kids who once split a slice after school now show up with their own children, ordering the same pie they grew up with. Regulars marked first dates, proposals, little league wins, and quiet Sunday dinners in our dining rooms. When people tell us they have been eating with us for years, it is not just a compliment; it is a reminder that Big Louie’s is woven into their routines and memories.

We see our staff and guests as one extended family that just happens to meet over red sauce and mozzarella. The greetings at the door, the extra side of sauce without needing to ask, the server who remembers how you like your pizza cooked, all of that matters. For anyone craving Italian food in South Florida that feels familiar, relaxed, and a little nostalgic, we want Big Louie’s to be the first name that comes to mind.

Here is what many guests tell us they appreciate most:

  • Food that tastes homemade, not mass-produced
  • Staff who remember faces and favorite orders
  • A casual atmosphere that works for both quick meals and long gatherings
  • Consistent quality across different visits and locations

Serving More Than Pizza: Community, Catering, and Milestones

From the beginning, we believed a neighborhood pizzeria should be part of local life, not just a place you pass by on your way home. Over the years, we have supported local teams, helped with school events, and provided food for community fundraisers. It has always felt natural to give back to the same people who choose us for their family dinners.

As our reputation grew, so did our role in celebrations. Catering became an extension of what we do in the dining room, only now the party might be in a backyard, an office break room, or a community center. Big trays of baked pasta, stacks of pizzas, and crisp salads started showing up at birthdays, office parties, game nights, and holiday gatherings. We heard time and again that having Big Louie’s at an event made it feel a little more like a family get-together.

Over four decades, there have been plenty of standout moments. Neighborhood events where we watched half the town line up for slices. School nights where kids in uniforms filled tables after a big game. Community fundraisers where sharing food felt like sharing support. These memories remind us that we are not just serving plates; we are sharing in people’s important days and everyday routines.

When people think of Italian food in South Florida, we are proud that Big Louie’s often comes to mind not only for flavor, but for a sense of connection. That is the part of the story that means the most to us.

Here are a few ways we try to stay rooted in the community:

  • Supporting local teams and school programs
  • Providing food for neighborhood events and fundraisers
  • Offering catering for family celebrations and office gatherings
  • Creating welcoming spaces for casual meetups and regular meals

Honoring 40 Years and Looking Toward the Future

As we approach our 40th anniversary, our main feeling is gratitude. We are grateful to the Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach communities that welcomed us, to the regulars who kept coming back, to the friends who brought visitors from out of town, and to the staff who shaped our culture from the kitchen to the front counter. The story of Big Louie’s is really the story of everyone who chose to share a meal with us.

To mark this milestone, we are planning anniversary specials and events that nod to our roots while giving longtime guests something new to enjoy. From limited-time menu items inspired by classic favorites to small celebrations inside the restaurants, our goal is simple: to say thank you in the best way we know how, with great food and warm hospitality. As we look to the years ahead, we are committed to staying true to what brought us here, honest, comforting Italian food in South Florida, served with the kind of care that keeps guests coming back across generations.
